Parishes

The parish apostolate has become increasingly important in the mission and life of the Society. There are now around 3,000 Jesuits working in over 2,000 parishes throughout the world.

Jesuit parishes are committed to the local Church in the service of the universal Church, while also aligning themselves with the general vision and mission of the Society.

Some characteristics of Jesuit parishes include:

  • Creative, lively, appropriate and inculturated liturgies and celebrations
  • Representative and strongly-engaged parish communities
  • A commitment to promoting faith and justice, with an overlying concern for environmental advocacy
  • Strong formation programs for members of the parish community in areas such as liturgy, leadership and faith development
  • A respect for local cultures and traditions of the people we serve, promoting those things that are good, life-giving and not contrary to the Gospel
  • A connection with other Jesuits and Jesuit ministries, as well as various advocacy groups

Apart from the ten Jesuit parishes across Australia there are Jesuit Parish Priests in East Fremantle in WA and in South St Albans VIC. Another important component of Jesuit pastoral ministry is the work of Jesuits involved in migrant chaplaincies to Polish, Spanish-speaking and other communities.
