Communications

From early times, Jesuits have seen the potential for communications in spreading the Word of God. Ignatius himself bought a printing press when he was the head of the Society, the first of many Jesuit publishing enterprises.

Jesuits in Australia have been publishing materials for the Catholic community for more than 100 years. Madonna magazine first began publishing in November 1897 and continues to be published today. Eureka Street was first printed in 1991, and became an online journal in 2006. Australia's largest Catholic magazine, Australian Catholics, was established in 1993.

Jesuit Communications was established in 2005 to provide communications support for the Jesuit Province Office as well as Jesuit ministries such as JRS and Jesuit Mission. Province Express is the fortnightly newsletter of the Australian Jesuits, featuring news stories, profiles and reflections from Jesuits and companions in Australia and abroad. Jesuit Communications also provides website development and maintenance, public relations support for Jesuit ministries, and publishes publications such as Jesuit Mission News and Flame.

With the wider Church, Jesuits are committed to the creative use of modern media for the communication of the Gospel. We see great value in helping teachers and students acquire the tools they need to use, interpret and critique modern media.

Companions is the magazine of the Australian Jesuit Province and is published twice a year. It provides friends and supporters of the Australian Jesuits and their ministries with news from around the Province, highlighting major new Jesuit initiatives.
