Newman College is a Catholic co-educational residential college affiliated to the University of Melbourne. There are 225 undergraduate residents and 20 postgraduates. Since its foundation in 1918 the Catholic Bishops of Victoria have entrusted the administration of the College and the pastoral care of the students to the Jesuits. Their aim is to foster the spiritual, intellectual and moral residential members of the College and to enable them to become effective leaders in the community, mature in faith and committed to justice.

The small Jesuit community, usually of three or four members and in cooperation with a dedicated lay staff, mixes interactively with the students, sharing meals in the College dining-room and participating in prayer, theological, academic, community service and book and film review groups. In addition each of the Jesuits typically has a professional expertise which he exercises outside the College. Currently, for instance, Peter Steele is a Professor of English Literature, Brian McCoy works in Aboriginal Research, Richard Leonard is the Director of both the Australian Catholic Film Office and the Australian Catholic Television Office, and Bill Uren is a consultant for the Australian Health Ethics Committee.
